The surrounding diverse coastline provides spectacular and often dramatic views of land and sea, which Fiona naturally draws upon as a major source for her work. “I’m particularly fascinated by the changing light and how it effects the colour and mood of the scene. It is never constant and I am always striving to capture the power and movement of the sea and sky.” The technique that Fiona has developed involves ‘pre-painting’ paper which is then glued to the surface of the canvas or board before finer detail is added. Initially, using plenty of water, the paint is allowed to move freely before building up thicker layers of colour and whilst the medium is still wet the paper is is used to create pattern and texture. “During the first stages I have to work quickly, relying more on instinct - it is always exciting to see what emerges! I get totally lost in the process and am constantly searching for new ways to portray the essence of the landscape through my painting methods.” Fiona’s work has been widely exhibited since 1999 through solo shows and group exhibitions. In 2014 she became a full member of the National Acrylic Painters Association, with her work being selected for various open exhibitions.
